I’m so excited that Wednesday is finally here. I could get used to having this Fall Festival every week, it has been so.much.fun!
Let’s not waste anytime, let’s get this party started……
There’s a fantastic GIVEAWAY this week!!!
Info @ the bottom of this post~ squeal!!! You’ll love it.
Alright, here we go ~
for my project this week I thought I would take on a project of a collection I’ve always wanted in my home, but have resisted because they tend to be rather pricey.
Ha~ not any more. 😉
here’s my
DIY version of vintage Mercury Glass Candle-holders.
I did use Martha’s post as a bit of a reference in the “how-to” for making mine. Although, I knew I wanted to include some metal flakes in my candle-holders & I also knew I wanted to include a vintage lace pattern in some of the candle-holders.
ALL but 2 of my candle-holders were from the dollar store. You know the ones that everyone is making hurricanes out of. Yep, those are the ones, I just decided to make mine into a diy mercury glass.
supplies:
candles-holders
craft paper or newspaper
painter’s tape
scissors
any type of spray glue (doesn’t have to be a stencil glue, it’s what I had on hand)
paper doilies
skewer sticks
metal flakes
KYRON LOOKING GLASS SPRAY PAINT
***outside of the purchase from the dollar store for my candle-holders, several weeks ago, the only things I purchased for this project was the KYRON LOOKING GLASS SPRAY PAINT & the metal flakes. I purchased both at Michael’s Craft Store with a 50% off coupon. Total spent on the 2 products was $11.49. Everything else I had on hand, as I think most of you would as well.***
After following Martha’s tips as to how to wrap & prep for this project, I also went to cutting & paper shaping my doilies.
Then I used the painter’s tape to secure the paper doilies around.
This above candle-holder has the spray glue inside (step 1) then I attached the metal flakes with skewer sticks (step 2). The I taped the paper doilies to the candle-holder (step 3).
Then using the same craft paper or newspaper you used to cover the OUTSIDE of your candle-holder when you sprayed the glue INSIDE, wrap it around again (step 4). Then with light short bursts spray the INSIDE with the Looking Glass Spray Paint (step 5). I did 2 coats on each candle-holder.
***It is important to note that this project took a lot of time (for the drying process) but I used a cardboard box to place everything in, to allow for drying time. Plus when I needed to walk away, it was all in one spot. The steps are really easy. It’s not really a complicated process, it just the drying & prepping that took the longest. I did practice on 2 empty pickle jars before starting on a candle-holder. Just to find a system that worked.***
Here’s the finished product.
(I know you are all sick of looking at my mantel, so I will spare you only a day & night photo of the *entire* mantel.)
All 10 of my DIY Vintage Mercury Glass Candle-holders during the day~
And night ~
I think it adds a “SPOOKY FACTOR” to our front room!
Plus, during the Fall & Winter, I love me some candles burning in the house at night. Cozy.
I am thrilled with the results! The 3 larger ones, I just sprayed the Looking Glass Spray & that’s it. The rest of the collection, I used the metal flakes & the paper doilies. I love that they vary. I think the variation makes the collection look a little bit more vintage & that it wasn’t all purchased at one place at the same time.
Here’s what a couple of them look like in a smaller setting ~
I love both looks. The entire collection together or a small grouping. 😉
What do you think?
Ok………………………………………………………
