For the love of cake and up cycling.
Have I ever mentioned that I love cake?
I do.
I also {LOVE} to upcycle, because other than a few supplies it’s basically free.
So this is a story about both of my loves –
cake & upcycling.
Below is my very first purchase from Williams & Sonoma…14 years ago.
Gosh, I’m getting old.
I loved them. They matched (past tense) my kitchen 14 years ago. They are sentimental to me, because as most of you know, I love Williams & Sonoma.
I hear angels singing Handel’s Messiah when I walk through the doors of W&S.
Nothing was wrong with them. They just didn’t match.
It was time to do an upcycle.
I happen to come across this permanent enamel paint that you can use for ceramics, tile or glass. The big thing about this particular paint, is that it is an Air-Dry Enamel Paint. Which is important, because most enamel paints require you to bake your project in order to set it. I couldn’t bake the lids of the canisters, because of the rubber seals around the rims.
So this was a perfect solution!
$3.99 @ Michael’s.
It worked like a charm.
3 coats of paint. Completely air drying in between each coat & 2 bottles later…
I had plain white canisters that were already looking good & weren’t the dated yellow & green color combo.
I know many people store food in their canisters, I usually don’t.
I store everyday supplies. Read the back of the paint bottle for specific instructions pertaining to food.
*Note ~ I did not paint the inside of the canisters. Only the exterior.*
So last Fall, Anthropologie & Target came out with numbered canisters. I fell in love with the look! Serious love.
I don’t have direct links to them, because they are now all sold out. You can see similar ones over at Remodelista, however they too are being listed as sold out. The canisters from Target last Fall, are in this post here or click here to see a pic of Anthrolpologie’s canisters.
I knew I wanted them the minute I saw them, but I wasn’t willing to pay the price.
But the good news is….
we can ALL do our own upcycle of dated canisters & have them compliment our kitchens once again. For a much smaller price.
Those are so cute!! What a great idea to be able to turn them around!
Love them! Love them! Love them!! I’ve been waiting to see what you did with your Silhouette first. We bought ours at the same time & while I have tons of ideas swirling around in my head, well you are by far the craftier one in our relationship 🙂 These are awesome and boy did you not disappoint. You make me want to go unpack my machine! Did you hear it cuts fabric now too? Not quite sure how that works yet, but I’m excited
gosh these turned out so cute!! I have some brick red splatter canisters I need to do this to. I am wondering how they will hold up=I have seen several bloggers who are having issues with their ceramic things they painted peeling. They may not have used the proper paint- not sure.
Love those canisters, Kellie! Your mind must continually be thinking up new creative and crafty ideas!
(Can’t wait for your spring linky parties. :-D)
I love what you can do with paint. I really need to give it a try.
They turned out amazing! Super cute!
LOVE!
Love it! They’re so fresh and fun! If you weren’t so far away I’d send you a slice of my famous chocolate cake with Swiss Meringue Butter-cream frosting:)
Cheers!
Theresa
First, I love cake too! I’ll take cake any day over meat and veggies. The cannisters turned out wonderful..so cute.
Hugs,
Sherry
Precious! Love your photography too
They are so very cute! and now you can use them and are practical!
Oh I love! I wish I was more into DIY projects. They look good but sadly it’s just not my talent.
These are so cute! Thanks for sharing that paint. I’ve been looking for glass paint that you don’t have to bake on. Sweet!
ADORABLE. I am a little obsessed with that type of paint, although I have never tried that brand. What a cute project!!!
I shared it on my tt&j fb page 🙂
Love you girly!!

I remember seeing those at Target & thought, while super-cute, they were out of my budget! ;0)
I love yours & think they turned out even cuter!
those turned out great!!
Getting old is only in our mind.
Age never prevented people from doing things:

Very inspiring project- AND I LOVE cake too!

So wonderful, love the two sided fun. Hmmm, does that stuff hold up outside. I want to paint one of those ceramic table things. Looks like a huge jar.
You just know how to melt my heart. You melted it equally this morning with sentiment and cuteness. Those jars are just way cute, and who doesn’t need to be reminded to eat more cake. I may have to beg you to put some special order vinyl in your shop for me, so I can make my jars pretty. I am so excited that you are now an owner of this wonderful machine, I know how badly you have wanted one. Plus I can’t wait to see the many beautiful things you create.

Love these! Great upcycling tip! I love CAKE too and this would be absolutely perfect in my kitchen, thanks so much for an awesome idea!
Love it!! What a great idea! 🙂 I especially love that you did a message on the backside!! That is too cute!
Oooh! I love the idea of keeping straws and napkins in your canisters! I have been looking for something to keep my napkins in, but I haven’t found anything yet and my straws are just up in the cabinet in their boring box…this would be so much better. I’m definitely going to be keeping my eyes open for some canisters! Great job!
Fantastic idea!! Geez, when your married in 1995 you better believe I have some vintage 90’s ceramic to play with! ~Jennifer
They look so good! What a great recycling project!
Debbie
SOOOO cute!! makes me wish I hadn’t given away my old canisters a while back!
You never cease to amaze me – these are so cute! Love them!
You never cease to amaze me! These are so cute!!!
These canisters turned out amazing! I never would have guessed they were redesigned! Love the cute message. To think, I gave away Canisters sets before due to them being outdated???? Thanks for inspiring us all to be more creative!
Sure Fit Slipcovers
I’m basically in love with this project! I never would have thought to be so clever on the back! Brilliant! Thanks for sharing!
They look so good! The two sides are perfect to change out…so fun:) MMMM..cake.
That paint is awesome! So glad you shared how it works! I’m in the market for new cannisters. Maybe I will get some at goodwill and upcycle!
love the font for “eat more cake” – do you remember its name?
Girl – you ROCK! just stinkin adorable:)
Those are so great!!! Even if you wanted new ones you could upcycle ones from Goodwill! I love this! And the fact that you used both side is so genius. AND listing vinyl for us?? Too sweet. 🙂 Wish I had a Silhouette. 😉 This would be a perfect Spring Fling idea too! Just sayin’. hmmmm… 🙂
I love these!!!! I just saw something similar on Ballard’s site today. I don’t have any canisters (yet). 🙂 I’m glad you gave the tip about the paint, I’ll have to remember that.
SO clever and fun! What a terrific project 🙂
These are great!!! Never would’ve thought to just paint over the old canisters! 🙂 Great idea!
Love everything about this project! Love that you painted over old canisters. Love the new numbers…but the words on the back was genius! How cute!
Those are cute! Now only if I had enough counter space for them. It’s limited in an apartment!
Oooh, I have never heard of an air dry enamel paint. Your jars are darling, especially the eat more cake side, love it!
I did the exact same thing a few months back with canisters I found at Goodwill. (1-2-3 on them) I never thought about having something on the back to be able to change it up! I am totally going to do this! Great job!
Oh how I love a good upcycle! The canisters look great, nice work! 🙂 I LOVE that you thought to embellish each side differently; that is seriously a GREAT idea! I think a pretty white cake platter (with a yummy cake!) would look adorable next to the canisters!
Wow! You are incredibly talented!! I love it!
Oh Kellie they are FAB-U-LOUS! I am SO going to get me some of that paint. I have a bunch of old stuff that could use whitening up now that I’ve gotten rid of the primitive colors from the early 90s. Love the jars! Lisa~
Love the eat more cake! What an amazing transformation.
They look great! I love doing stuff like this….Thanks for sharing.
What a fun project! I love to use something old and give it a new purpose, especially if it is sentimental. I love both sides…but I’m a little partial to the Eat More Cake 😉 Great job and great inspiration!
I have some serious love for this project! I was gifted some canisters that I’ve always kept hidden away because I wasn’t so fond of the pattern and when I saw you on the link up I crossed my fingers that this was an easy re-do and it SO is!! Thanks!!

Singing Hallelujah myself, I just grabbed my much loved Marjolein Bastin ceramic out of the donor box! SCORE! TFS, Celia
Love them and LOVE the sentiment!!
LOVE THIS more than capital letters can get across!!! As soon as my kids get home I’m going to hit the thrift store and see if I can find some canisters! Awesome project!!
What an amazing idea. I have a similar set of blue ones that I was going to throw out. Painting them seems like much more fun. Thank you for sharing. I’m a new follower.
