6 years ago this week we drove up this road to see what house went with the newly placed For Sale sign out on the corner of the road. The house had been on the market for 3 days.
Immediately after walking in this house, I had that powerful unquestionable feeling, I was in love. The house, an old 1920’s Sears Catalog Home, had unbelievable character. Gorgeous hardwood floors, thick baseboards, great features & more room then I knew what to do with at the time. It was nestled in a neighborhood full of more Sears catalog homes & churches with white steeples.
3 days later we put an offer in on the house.
The sellers’ taste in decorating was extreme opposite of my own taste. I have yet to see any paint jobs as bad as this house had. But it didn’t matter. I knew that it would take awhile to get the house looking like I wanted it to look & to fill it up with furniture. The house had great bones & I had a major case of a Spring affair with the house.
6 years ago, we became homeowners of our very first home. Every Spring like magic, a new sense of pride comes all over me. It’s like all those first feelings of being a first time home owner return back when Spring arrives. My grass becomes the greenest grass on the block.
Even when our front porch is looking like this:
It doesn’t matter.
Or when more of the peg stick thingys break off in my dishwasher that is as old as the house, it doesn’t matter. Spring has returned & I feel like I have the best house on the block.
I have a list a mile long of what I would like to do or improve upon in our home. I dream of having some modern touches added, like a mud room or laundry room on the main floor instead of going down to a deep dark dungeon basement.
But then, I look at the natural beauty I have around me & am reminded of how blessed we are. It’s that proud home owner thing that bounces back this time every year. It really is my Spring Fling.
I could never dream this street up even in my best dreams during Spring time.
It’s a street full of magic this time of year, inside & outside.

oh yes, I recognize that falling in love with the house the moment you walk in it. Our house is from the forties, so the old lady is getting old too. But I love her, rough around the edges and all.
So glad you have a house that feels like a home.
Beautiful neighborhood, it wears Spring well.

Beautiful post. I hope this happens for us someday. 🙂

I can totally relate with you when you say you walk into a home and fell in love with it despite the unattractive wall colors and other cosmetic flaws. Homes like this always take lots of time and effort to make it your own but in the end, it’s all worth it.
Good post!

I love you, your heart is beautiful and thankful–I am blessed to call you friend. You know I love you home and it is on the perfect street and it is full of character but more importantly it is filled with you and your boys and that one tiny precious girlie, your home is perfect. I am wishing I was there right now.

You have a beautiful home. I have to ask about the word art on your picture wall. Did you do that? And are they words specifically for your family? That is just the neatest idea! I want one!!

Love! I, too, hope to someday have that feeling when we walk in a house … that we can call it our own!

What a beautiful story:) Thanks for sharing and reminding us to see the beauty in our ‘home’ instead of the flaws in our house. What beautiful spring pictures! ~I will say I am a wee bit envious of your neighborhood;)…LOVE!

I love this post!! Blogging is a hard thing when you see constant home improvements and get in the mind set of trying to keep up with the Jonses. This definitely reminds people to simmer down and take a breath. Be grateful for what we have!! I love my house and all it’s imperfections…buuutttt, I still like to keep my self busy with the little projects! 🙂

I may have to disagree with you about the former owner and their crappy taste in design! We bought a modular and the former owner painted the living room (opposing walls) Dirt brown, and brick red, the kitchen burnt orange with sponge painted peach over the top, and the master bedroom was sponge painted light and dark brown, but the dark brown was on top. (Oh, and they didn’t take any of the wall hangings down either, so when they moved out the touched up the horrible wall paint as well! EW!) =(
