Being without power for 5 days is a long time when you have kids.
Being without power for 5 days is a long time for anybody.
I think we did fairly well. I found myself saying “Yes” a lot more to the kids, because let’s face it, when you don’t have power everyone has to be creative! I couldn’t let them play outside because we had live wires down in our yard, well all over our neighborhood. So the entire house became one big playroom. Who knew that bubble wrap could be so entertaining?
The first things that sold out in our town was ice & candles, I do believe. A few days before all this happened, I happened to score several of the above candles at Wal-mart. They have a burn time of 20 hours. I think they are the cheap version of the wonderfully smelling Cucina Soaps & body line. Trust me, they are worth every bit of $3.00 & then some. Next time you are at Wal-mart check your clearance section. They smell awesome!
On another note, I found myself every evening trying to turn on a light switch so I could see to light the candles. Dumb, Kellie. Real dumb.
When all of the electrical trucks (like 10 of them) pulled down our street, it was all I could do to contain myself. My big unwashed hair needed power & a shower! (My hair gets big when it hasn’t been washed, just so you know.) I honestly don’t think those men knew what they were getting themselves into when they pulled into our yard. I came out offering every Little Debbie treat we had in our house. (which wasn’t much since we were living on no power, remember.) My big hair & I hugged everyone of those guys from this truck.
Our internet came back on Tuesday evening…I’ve never been so excited just to turn on the computer & the TV in all my life. And what a week of TV to miss for gosh sakes! So…all this to say, if anyone needs me – come find me in front of the TV, eating some chips n dip, trying to find glimpses of Kate & Will.
Have a lovely weekend, everyone!
Be thankful for the little things!

Glad you survived! I would have had to risk a cold shower for my hair or lived in hats for four days. You definitely deserve an award for having Little Debbie snacks remaining after 5 days with no power and two kids!

I know exactly what you went through. May 8, 2009, we had an Inland Hurricane (later renamed a Derecho) in southern Illinois. We had 110 mph straight-line winds and the devastation was awful. Homes destroyed, trees uprooted, power lines were down everywhere. We had to drive about 40 miles to get ice and it was a fight just to get a package of hotdogs to throw on the grill. We were without power for 6 days. My son was 5 months old & had severe acid reflux which means he vomited on all of his clothes several times a day. It was a nightmare.
I was home alone with my son when the storm hit. It was the most frightening thing I’ve ever lived through. I thought the roof was lifting off the house. Come to find out later, it was our gazebo hitting the roof as it went over the house.
To say I hate the spring storms is an understatement.
I know how good that first shower feels. How exciting it is to do that first load of laundry. To sit down and watch tv and play on the internet again. You just feel so isolated from the world and it feels so good to reconnect.
I am so happy that your family is safe and that you are back to blogging! I hope you have a relaxing and happy Mother’s Day!
