My hopes are to paint them white & then make them look all distressed again. Like they had been painted white for 100 years or so. With all sorts of chippy-ness in the paint. There’s no question that these wooden spindles are as old as the hills, because I had layers of dirt on my hands digging through the boxes. In the end, I spent $10.00 for all 4 pieces & thinking if I get the paint right with glazing I will have some very pretty detail pieces to add to our mantel. Fingers crossed!
Have you ever shopped at salvage yards? I couldn’t help but wonder about the people who lived in these house that owned some of these fabulous pieces, that are now being sold item by item. How they probably labored & built their homes themselves back in the day. How the glass doorknobs opened up into a child’s room, or how the porch columns could tell stories of all the Summers gone by. How the real mercury glass Christmas ornaments shared the magic of all the Christmas mornings. It all is obviously things we lust over now. Craftsmanship that will never be found again. Going through all the boxes & rows of fabulous architecture you just can’t help but feel attached to the unknown stories from the old houses. I have no idea where my pieces came from or how old they might be, but I do know I think I’ll treasure them so much more than any new detail I could buy at a hardware store.
In other news…my husband & I will be shopping this week & next for a new tin roof. I’m soooo excited to have a tin roof or I guess the correct way to say it, is a metal roof. I know, not that exciting to all of you, but oh my – do we ever need a new roof. We already know the style we want. It’s like this below in the same shade…..fun right?
Our house is nowhere near as grand as this above, but it has some similarities. White, 2 story. a large porch (not a wrap around) & we have 2 large eaves in the front of our house. So it’s a good reflection of how ours may look once it’s all done. eek!
I’m realllllllllllllly hoping I can sweet talk him into some wooden shingles to go on just one eave of our house. I’ve wanted wooden shingles from the day I signed the dotted line for our house. Similar to how they did this below:
I’m telling you….pinterest is full of inspiration & tons of T.R.O.U.B.L.E. as Travis Tritt would say. 😉
If nothing else, it’s always fun to dream with you all. The roof is a must, the eave wood shingles, well…that’s a want. Fingers & toes crossed.
Have a great week everyone.
THANK YOU!

I have been seeing those glass door handles around a lot lately. We had those on our doors when I was a kid lol. Love the vintage Christmas ornaments also [hmmm… that may just be my ‘theme’ this year…].
As for the metal roof, how awesome! We have a metal roof also. Just make sure the roofers put the right screws/mounts in. Our roof was missing about 20-something of the mounts, so it was just the screw. Well low and behold from rain over the months, our roof started leaking. We had to have a section of the roof cut out, wood replaced and put back correctly 🙁 All in all it’s an awesome roof though!
Happy Monday!

I don’t know of any salvage yards around here, but oh my goodness I NEED to find some! I’m so glad you got your hour of salvage time. I know you will make that mantle mah-velous! We added a porch and metal roof to our house several years ago and I LOVE it. With your gift for landscaping it will be amazing. Lisa~

LOVE those glass doorknobs, and we had a tin roof for a couple of years in a rental house we were staying in, and there is just nothing more cozy than a rainy day under a tin roof! Happy shopping!

I really have to limit my time on pinterest because of 1) jealousy and 2) too many idea for my mama brain to hold. 😉
