To me a slow cooker is right up there with the Sonic Ice Maker, or even a Keurig. It’s the simplest machine, but man, does it ever make life easy. Not to mention taste soooo good! I’ve never had a crock pot meal that I didn’t like. And lets just go ahead & say, the slow cooker is like having a cook that gladly takes the back seat to make you look like a star when the dinner bell rings. It’s like my BFF in the kitchen.
Making a turkey breast in the slow cooker is probably one of the easy things you can ever make. It takes very little ingredients & very little prep, and then you just turn it on & allow it to do all the work.
There are a few key things you need to do when prepping & cooking a turkey:
*Wash your turkey
*Sanitize your working area once you have your turkey in the slow cooker
*Have a meat thermometer on hand
*When your turkey is fully cooked the temperature inside the bird should be 190*
Take your turkey breast out of that packaging and remove any of the gravy or packaging inside & set aside or place in the fridge for the time being. Once you have removed everything wash the turkey off in your sink & pat dry with paper towels. Then place your turkey breast inside the slow cooker. Please make sure you have carefully washed your hands & thrown away all the paper towels & turkey wrappings in the trash. I then sanitize the sink and the counter to make everything is clean & sterile.
My Turkey breast was 5 lbs. My slow cooker is a small 4 quart size. So please know cooking time may vary. The most important thing to know is that your Turkey needs to be 190* inside, so please cook accordingly. This truly is one of the easiest things you can make in the slow cooker, you just need to make sure you have cleaned & sanitized your prepping area & cook to 190*.
Ingredients
- 1 Turkey Breast
- EVOO
- salt & pepper
- Fresh Rosemary
- Fresh Thyme
Instructions
- Turn your slow cooker on high.
- Place your washed Turkey Breast inside your slow cooker & pour a generous amount of EVOO (about a half cup or so) over the Turkey. Spread EVOO around with your hands or a basting brush.
- Salt & Pepper the Turkey depending upon your preference. Poultry usually requires quite a bit.
- Chop some fresh Rosemary & place on top of the Turkey.
- In addition, use about 2-3 twigs of Rosemary & place on the Turkey as well.
- Place fresh twigs of Thyme & sprinkle all over the bird.
- Add more EVOO if needed
- Cook your Turkey for at least an hour on high. (I usually cook mine on high for 2 hours)
- Then place your slow cooker on low and cook for about 6-7 hours.
- Once your Turkey has reached 190* inside, carefully remove from slow cooker & place on carving board. Cover with foil & let cool or stand for about 10 minutes.
- Carve the turkey & serve.
You’ll start to notice your house is smelling really good. The fresh herbs will continue to simmer & make the house smell wonderful! Once your Turkey is finished, it should be a golden color with deep beautiful cooked herbs on top. I always add a few more fresh herbs on top to make it a contrast of colors from fresh to cooked. I personally love that kind of contrast.
Remember to allow your Turkey to stand for about 10 minutes before you carve it. I promise that a slow cooker Turkey is probably the most moist turkey you’ve ever had. You cannot go wrong. If you’re cooking for a bigger family, you can always invest in a larger crock pot & cook a larger bird. Or as my in-laws do, we all bring our crock pots over & cook 3 Turkey Breasts at the same time.
We had this the other day with some of my favorite Thanksgiving trimmings. It was delish! I try not to eat the traditional Thanksgiving dishes too close to Thanksgiving because I always love to have those flavors taste “fresh” in November. I love to savor every bite in November! But if you’re looking for the easiest way to cook a Turkey, this is for you! You will love it.
My friend Melissa, from No 2 Pencil, has an amazing recipe for Slow Cooker Chicken, if you’re wanting to make an everyday dish in the slow cooker. Also check out her technique of placing foil balls in the bottom of the slow cooker. So all the heat can flow through while you cook.
