I can honestly declare that my Grandma’s Texas Sheet Cake recipe is a slice straight from heaven. It’s a cake made entirely from scratch but worth every single second of your time.
The nice thing about it though, is that it only bakes for 15-20 minutes depending on your oven.
Trust me, the wait is SO WORTH IT!
I’m sure most of you have had a Texas Sheet Cake, but I swear that my Grandma’s Texas Sheet Cake is the best. Her recipe calls for buttermilk, and I’m sure most of you know that if you don’t have Buttermilk on hand you can add some vinegar to your milk, and therefore create Buttermilk.
Well, that happened to me (more times than I can count) but one time, I got brave & decided to try Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar instead of just regular vinegar. You know…because of the health benefits. 😉 But honestly you can’t even tell the difference! So now I just use Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar all the time.
Ingredients
- 2 cups of sugar
- 2 cups of shifted all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- dash of salt
- 2 sticks of butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup of shifted cocoa
- 1/2 cup of buttermilk - or if you don't have buttermilk, 1/2 cup milk + 1 teaspoon of vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- FROSTING:
- 1 stick of butter
- 1/4 cup cocoa
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 box of powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
Instructions
- This is a classic recipe of where you mix all the dry ingredients together in one bowl, and the wet ingredients will be stirred together in a saucepan, brought to a boil, then poured & mixed in with the dry ingredients.
- PREHEAT OVEN to 475
- In a large bowl add your dry ingredients:
- Sugar, Flour, Cinnamon, baking soda & powder, and salt. Whisk all the dry ingredients together.
- In a saucepan over med/high heat mix & stir together:
- Butter, Water & Cocoa. Cook & stir constantly until boiling.
- Remove from heat, pour & mix over the dry ingredients & blend well.
- Add your Buttermilk, 2 beaten eggs, and vanilla into your batter. Mix together, but not over mix.
- Pour batter into your 9x13 baking dish & bake for 15-20 minutes. Your batter will be very thin compared to box mixes, so do not be worried. The high baking temperature (475*) will bake it perfectly!
- Once cake is down, remove from oven & allow to cool a little.
- Once cake has cool to a warm temperature, it's time to make your delicious frosting.
- In a saucepan add 1 stick of butter, cocoa and milk.
- Stir, Stir, Stir until on medium heat until you reach a boil.
- Remove from heat.
- Add box of powered sugar, SHIFTED!
- Add vanilla
- And stir together until all the powered sugar is dissolved. (YUMMY!)
- Pour your frosting on your cake when it is still warm, and the frosting is at a medium heat.
- The combination of the 2, truly is perfection!
One of the key secrets to this cake, is shifting your flour, cocoa (if it’s lumpy) and your powered sugar. It may take a few more minutes, but I promise it’s worth it!
Mix the powered sugar & vanilla into the saucepan. Once it is all mixed together, pour that rich & delicious warm frosting over your cake.
Me oh my. It is to die for!
One of my favorite parts about making my Grandma’s Texas Sheet Cake, is that I always get to lick the spoon!
Because licking the spoon is the best part, right?
As far as the actual cake part…it is perfectly moist & dense.
I promise, this recipe is sent from heaven!!! It is the best Texas Sheet Cake Recipe I’ve ever tried.
You’ll have no regrets when licking the spoon, or taking a big bite of my Grandma’s Texas Sheet Cake.
It never disappoints!!!
As for my Grandma, she’s in heaven now. I’m sure they ask her to make this cake all the time for them. I have such fond treasured memories of her. She was full of style & sass. Loved her Texas sized jewelry, lipstick & Oscar de la Renta perfume. But she also could bake up a storm. Her house always had a combination of something baking in the oven, her babble bath & her perfume. There was nothing like walking in her door, and hearing her say “hello!” and smelling those sweet smells.
