I absolutely love changing out my window boxes for the seasons. But of course, it can be expensive when you’re doing it often. I thought I’d share my inexpensive tips on what to plant in your Christmas window boxes.
- Cypress Branches – clip various sizes. Cypress trees grow so fast, that most won’t miss any clippings from their trees, if you don’t have any in your yard.
- Magnolia leaf bunches – when you’re clipping from a tree, I like to get some of the branches so you can stick it down in the dirt and showcase the cluster of leaves.
- Dried Hydrangea flowers. Any type of hydrangea flower will do. This is the first year I added them to my Christmas flower boxes and I love the look!
- White Pampas Grass. It’s the feather clusters that grow out in the Fall. They’re so pretty and a fun layer to add to the boxes.
- Faux berries – or if you have holly berries add those instead. The red just for color up against the greenery and dried flowers. It’s a beautiful pop of color and draws the eye in.
- Twigs and Branches! For height and texture.
The beauty of what to plant in your Christmas window boxes depends on what you have available in your area or yard. Think “outside the box” – is there a park or an area off the side of the road where you can find some fresh clippings for free? Even ask your neighbors. You’ll be surprised, most people will say “yes” to this sort of things.
The day after I took these pictures for this post, we had a light dusting of snow. I thought I would add to them to this post – just to see how it all looks in with a little bit of snow.
- Make sure you soil is moist when putting your clippings – they will last longer and stay fresh
- Don’t be afraid to just use only 2 things – if that’s all you have available.
- Just make them look FULL!
