How to make Plush Velvet Pumpkins

Who else has a major crush on those Plush Velvet Pumpkins floating around blogland?  Me Me Me!
I had this in my head since last year, and was finally able to make my own Plush Velvet Pumpkins this weekend.

I couldn’t believe how easy they were to make, once I had all the supplies.

Supplies needed:
Velvet fabric (I found mine on eBay for cheap)
scissors
thread
needle
pen
~also *shown below*
*vines or stems from real pumpkins
*glue sticks & glue gun
*stuffing
*beans

*Lay your fabric out & draw with your pen various size circles.
*Cut your circles

Now thread your needle & watch this video.  Goodness gracious – I can’t believe I’m showing this.  (just so you all know, I’m in my jammies making this.  lol)
But it was the fastest way to demonstrate just how EASY they are to make to some of you who don’t like to stitch or sew.

I’m not a video pro, so be kind. I’m sensitive.  😉

Now it’s time to stuff your pumpkins.
Yep, I used pinto beans & stuffing.  The pinto beans help put a little bit of weight in the fabric so they wont fall over.  I recommend tearing off your stuffing in small amounts at a time while you stuff.
Now for the glue.
You will need a very small amount of glue.  You can do it in glue dots around your stem to the velvet opening or in a small line.  It’s up to you.  I liked the dots, myself.
Let me stop right here & say getting these stems are probably the hardest part of the supplies needed for these pumpkins.  I had 1 from last year that I kept.  But we went on a field trip this past week to a pumpkin patch & in a matter of minutes I was fighting the kindergartners for their stems off their pumpkins.
Just kidding.  😉
Really ~ thankfully one of the teachers (kindred spirit) watched my 3 while I went racing through the patch to find some stems.   I knew I just had a few minutes, but you can bet my pockets were full of stems in 5 minutes flat.  😉

And when you’re done with the glue, you’ll probably have to play around with your fabric some so the pleats will look even.  Another words, fluff & puff those gorgeous {scrumptious} pumpkins.
Those curly q’s make my heart pitter patter just a little bit faster.
The hardest part to me was cutting the fabric.  Everything else is easy as can be.  You can make them in whatever size you want.  Anything goes, because trust me – they will turn out simply gorgeous & scrumptious.  😉
total cost:
velvet – $12.00 + $3.00 ship
pumpkin stems – Pumpkin Patch Ticket $7.00.  Which I got 2 real pumpkins & probably 7 stems for this project, with the Farm’s permission, of course.

    I bought my stems from ebay where they are already dried and no insects within! They are gorgeous and I have been a pumpkin making factory !!!!

I have loved these from afar for ages since seeing them last year and would love to make me some- I have a ton a velvet stored away for a quilting project that has yet to happen so just need to get started. On my flower pumpkin I found that sun flower stalks look very much like pumpkin stems and used it.

  38. Though I’m way past “the season”, belated thanks for your wonderful instructions!!! I am SO excited to make my own now (the challenge will be obtaining pumpkins stems)! I bought one from Rachel Ashwell’s Shabby Chic couture website in November, and even at 50% off with free shipping, an 8-inch one was $27! I absolutely love it, but yours are every bit as gorgeous and now I can make my own in colors like pale gray, white, French blue, soft aqua …. I am beside myself that I’ll be able to make my own big “pumpkin patch” and make some as gifts, too! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
