If you only knew how many times I’ve done the happy dance over this light/lampshade remodel, you all would probably laugh. Please tell me, that you all do a dance over a project when it’s done, because I.sure.do.
My lampshade was inspired by this Anthropologie lamp shade. When I saw it, I knew immediately I wanted some sort of version of it in our hallway.
Here’s how I did it.
My supplies:
A thrift store lamp shade that was $1.50.
These supplies that the nice man at Lowe’s told me to buy when I brought in my thrift lamp shade & told him what I was wanting to do. *I did hire an apprentice electrician (highly recommended by a friend) for $20.00 an hour. This took him less then an hour to do.*
Here’s my plain boring light fixture before:
Here’s the after:
Supplies to create the lampshade:
I think I need to buy stock in this company. This print-n-press paper & I have become BFFs.
I used frames that I found over on The Graphic Fairy’s blog & I used the same silhouette’s from our frame above the mantel. However I used Loo-La-Bee Simplicity’s tutorial on how to do our silhouettes from the computer using Picnik.com. Great tutorial & so easy.
The next part was all trial & lots of errors. I had the hardest time lining up the frames with the silhouettes.
Soooo…I ended up patching the silhouettes to the muslin fabric for the first layer. (It’s the only way I could get it to work, for me.) I’ll let the pictures do the talking ~
If you look close you can see the patch of the silhouette glued on the first layer underneath the frame. After many errors – I finally thought up the patch idea to help line the frames up with each picture inside.
I added this picture above to show you that the inside bracket that attaches to the harp needs to be at the top or bottom of the lamp shade. Most new lamp shades have the inside bracket in the middle, that would not work when trying to convert a pendant fixture to hold a large lamp shade. Because your harp would end up showing. I had to hang my lampshade upside down, to make it work. But it didn’t matter, since it was the same size & shape all the way around.
